What is relaxation massage?
Relaxation massage is the classic full-body massage — the one most people picture when they hear the word "massage". Smooth, flowing strokes across the back, shoulders, arms, legs and feet, with medium-light pressure and a calm, unhurried pace. Internationally it's often called Swedish massage, and it's the foundation that most "spa" and "wellness" massage styles are built on.
At Massage by Laura's Runaway Bay studio, relaxation massage is delivered by Laura — an ATMS-registered remedial massage therapist with 8 years of clinical experience. So even though the goal of the session is calm rather than therapeutic correction, the work itself is grounded in proper anatomical knowledge. Pressure is responsive, transitions are smooth, and the session flows from start to finish without rushed sections or awkward gaps.
No theatrical extras — no stones, no candling, no aromatherapy upsells. Just well-delivered full-body massage in a calm environment, at the most accessible price point on our menu.
Why relaxation massage is the everyday choice
There's a reason this style of massage has stayed essentially unchanged for centuries — it works. Smooth, sustained, full-body touch reliably shifts the body out of stress mode and into rest-and-recovery mode. Muscles soften. Breathing deepens. The background noise of a busy mind quietens.
Most clients leave a relaxation massage feeling noticeably calmer, physically lighter, and ready for a genuinely good sleep that night. It's the kind of treatment you don't have to "need" to enjoy — there doesn't have to be a specific injury, condition or stressor. You can book it just because you'd like an hour where nothing is asked of you.
Benefits of relaxation massage
What an hour of well-delivered relaxation massage actually does:
- Shifts you into the rest-and-restore state — sustained calming touch is one of the most reliable triggers for parasympathetic activation
- Eases everyday muscular tension across the back, shoulders, neck and legs — the kind that builds up from work, posture, stress, screens and life
- Improves circulation through the soft tissues
- Supports better sleep on the night of the session — most clients notice it
- Reduces stress and mental fatigue through the combination of calming touch and uninterrupted time
- Lifts mood — there's a real, measurable wellbeing benefit from human, professional, calm touch
- Gives you an hour of complete uninterrupted time — no phone, no decisions, no demands
None of these are dramatic clinical outcomes — relaxation massage is not the same as remedial or deep tissue work. But they're real everyday benefits that compound when relaxation massage is part of an ongoing routine.
Relaxation vs the speciality calming treatments
We offer four full-body calming treatments, and they overlap. Here's the honest comparison:
vs de-stress massage
De-stress is a deeper-feeling version of the same idea — slower pacing, more extended head, scalp and face work, optional aromatherapy add-on. It's positioned specifically around nervous-system regulation for clients carrying real ongoing stress. The price reflects that extra time and depth — A$119 (60 min) vs relaxation's A$89. If stress is the specific reason you're booking, choose de-stress. If you just want a beautiful classic massage, choose relaxation.
vs hot stone massage
Hot stone introduces a different mechanism for relaxation — heated basalt stones placed on and used in the massage. The warmth allows muscles to release without needing firmer pressure, and the sensory experience is distinctive. Same price as de-stress (A$119 / 60 min). Choose hot stone if warmth particularly appeals or you tend to feel cold. Choose relaxation if you'd rather a classic hands-only experience.
vs reflexology
Reflexology zones in on just the feet (and lower legs in the longer version). Different format, different price point (A$59 for 30 min). Choose reflexology if you don't want a full-body session — sore feet, can't disrobe comfortably, or just want focused foot work. Choose relaxation for full-body coverage.
Relaxation vs remedial — when to upgrade
If you have a specific issue — a recurring sore spot, an injury that hasn't quite resolved, postural problems, chronic neck or back pain — you'll get more from remedial massage. It starts with assessment, identifies what's actually driving the issue, and uses targeted techniques to address it. Same therapist, same studio — but a more diagnostic approach.
Two key reasons to choose remedial over relaxation:
- You have a specific issue to address (not just general tightness) — remedial is the right framework for that
- You have private health extras cover — remedial is claimable on most major Australian health funds (BUPA, Medibank, HCF, NIB etc), where relaxation isn't. The out-of-pocket cost often ends up similar after rebate
Many clients alternate — remedial when they need something specific addressed, relaxation when they just want to unwind. Both have their place.
Who relaxation massage suits (and who it might not)
Relaxation massage is a great fit if you want a classic full-body massage at an accessible price, you're new to massage and want a straightforward introduction, you don't need any specific issue addressed, you're booking a gift voucher, you want a monthly wellness ritual that doesn't break the budget, or you simply want an hour of calm without theatrical extras.
Relaxation might not be the right starting point if you have a specific injury or pain (book remedial), you want firm or deep pressure (book deep tissue), you're pregnant (book remedial pregnancy), or you specifically want aromatherapy, heated stones or the deeper nervous-system positioning of de-stress.
This treatment can help with
Relaxation massage is most useful for clients dealing with these patterns:
What to expect during your appointment
Your session begins with a brief, low-key conversation — how you're feeling, what kind of week you've had, any areas you'd like extra attention on, anything to flag. Laura will check in about your preferred pressure (most clients prefer medium-light, but some like it a touch firmer — either is fine for a relaxation session).
You undress to your comfort level — most clients undress fully or to underwear — and lie face-down on the table. You'll be draped with towels throughout the session; only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time. Laura steps out briefly while you settle, then returns to begin.
The session itself flows from one area to the next without rushing — typically back, shoulders, neck, arms, legs and feet, then turning over for the front body. Many clients drift in and out of sleep. The studio is quiet, dimly lit and designed to help you fully switch off.
Afterwards, most clients leave feeling noticeably calmer, physically lighter, and ready for a good night's sleep. The relaxation effect tends to carry through the rest of the day.
