What is hot stone massage?

Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated basalt stones combined with hands-on massage to create a uniquely warming, deeply relaxing experience. Where standard massage relies on pressure to release muscular tension, hot stone introduces a second mechanism — heat — that allows the body to soften and let go without the need for firm pressure. The stones are placed on specific points and also used as an extension of the hands, glided through the muscles with oil for a smooth, flowing treatment.

At Massage by Laura's Runaway Bay studio, hot stone is offered as a 60 or 90-minute treatment for clients across the Gold Coast. Every session is delivered by Laura — an ATMS-registered remedial massage therapist with 8 years of clinical experience — so the placement of stones and the pacing of the session is grounded in proper anatomical understanding, not just spa choreography.

Why heat changes everything

Warmth is the single most reliable signal we can give a stressed body that it's safe to let go. When muscles are warm, they release tension more easily. When the body is warm, the nervous system shifts out of its braced, alert state and into the parasympathetic "rest and restore" mode. When we're warm, our breath slows, our jaw relaxes, our shoulders drop — often without us realising it.

Hot stone massage uses this principle deliberately. The heated stones — smooth basalt, selected for their density and ability to hold warmth — are placed on areas where tension tends to live (along the spine, on the shoulders, sometimes in the palms or between the toes) and also used in the massage itself, where they slide through muscle with a different quality of pressure than human hands alone.

Benefits of hot stone massage

Hot stone delivers a particular combination of benefits that comes from the marriage of heat and hands-on work:

  • Deep muscular release without the intensity of firm pressure — the heat does much of the work
  • A genuine shift into the relaxation response — warmth is one of the most reliable triggers for parasympathetic activation
  • Improved circulation through the warmth-affected areas
  • Reduced muscular stiffness in chronically tight regions — particularly the upper back and shoulders
  • A sense of being thoroughly thawed — particularly welcome in winter, in air-conditioning, or when you've been chilled and tense
  • Emotional settling — most clients feel notably calmer and lighter afterwards
  • Better sleep on the night of the session — the warmth and relaxation tend to carry through

Many clients describe hot stone as one of the most distinctive treatments they've experienced — not just "another massage" but something that uses a fundamentally different tool (heat) to achieve the relaxation.

Why people book hot stone massage on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast climate is generally warm, but plenty of clients still find themselves chronically chilled — long hours in air-conditioning, swimming pools, beach mornings in winter, or simply running cold by nature. For those clients, hot stone is the most welcome treatment on the menu.

Common reasons clients book:

  • Carrying a lot of tension and wanting to relax without firm pressure
  • Feeling cold-sensitive or constantly chilled in air-conditioning
  • Wanting a true spa experience as a treat or special occasion
  • Trying something different from regular massage
  • Helping a wound-up nervous system genuinely switch off
  • Easing chronic tightness through the upper back and shoulders
  • Looking for a calming session as a regular wellness ritual

How a hot stone session works

The stones — smooth, polished basalt — are warmed in a heater to a comfortable temperature before the session begins. Laura always tests each stone against her own skin before it touches yours, and you're welcome to adjust the temperature at any point.

During the session, the stones are used in two complementary ways. Some are placed on the body and left to rest — typically along the spine, on the shoulders, sometimes in the hands or feet — radiating warmth into those areas while Laura works elsewhere. Others are held and used as an extension of the hands, glided through the muscles with oil. The combination creates a session that alternates between deeply still warmth and flowing, warm movement — which is part of what makes the experience feel so distinctive.

The studio is dimly lit and quiet, the music soft, and the focus from start to finish is on creating the kind of complete sensory environment that allows your body to genuinely settle.

Hot stone vs other relaxation treatments

Hot stone vs de-stress massage

Both prioritise calm and nervous-system regulation. The difference is the primary tool: hot stone uses warmth as the main relaxation mechanism; de-stress uses pacing, sensory environment and optional aromatherapy. Choose hot stone if warmth particularly appeals or if you tend to feel cold. Choose de-stress if you want a flowing full-body session with the aromatherapy option.

Hot stone vs relaxation massage

Relaxation massage is the classic flowing, full-body, hands-only treatment. Hot stone introduces heated stones as both placement and massage tools. Both are calm and unhurried — the hot stone option is a more distinctive sensory experience, while relaxation is the more familiar choice.

Hot stone vs deep tissue massage

Different goals entirely. Deep tissue uses firm pressure to release chronic muscular tension and target specific tightness. Hot stone uses warmth and gentler pressure to encourage release through a different mechanism. If you carry stubborn knots that need direct pressure, book deep tissue. If you want warmth and overall calm, book hot stone. Some clients alternate between the two depending on what their body is asking for.

Who hot stone suits (and who it doesn't)

Hot stone is a good fit if you want a deeply relaxing, warming experience, you tend to feel cold or chilled easily, you'd like to switch off completely for an hour or 90 minutes, you enjoy sensory-led treatments, or you're looking for something distinctive as a special self-care session.

Please do NOT book hot stone if you have:

  • Pregnancy — book remedial pregnancy massage instead
  • High blood pressure, heart disease or circulatory conditions
  • Diabetes with reduced skin sensation
  • Recent surgery (please wait for medical clearance)
  • Heat sensitivity, sunburn, rashes or skin conditions in the treatment area
  • Varicose veins or open wounds in the treatment area
  • Medications that affect skin sensitivity or heat tolerance

If you're unsure whether hot stone is right for you, send Laura a message first and she'll happily check. We'd rather guide you to the right treatment than book the wrong one.

This treatment can help with

Hot stone massage is most useful for clients dealing with these patterns:

What to expect during your appointment

Your session begins with a brief conversation about how you're feeling, your heat sensitivity, any medical considerations, and what you'd like from the session. Laura will explain how the stones will be used and check in throughout.

The session itself alternates between still and flowing — stones placed and left to warm specific areas, while Laura works elsewhere with hands or with stones held in her palms. The pacing is unhurried. The studio is quiet, dimly lit and designed to help you fully switch off.

Most clients leave feeling thoroughly warmed-through, calmer, and noticeably more relaxed than when they arrived. The warmth tends to carry through the rest of the day, and many clients sleep particularly well on the night of a hot stone session.

Frequently asked questions

What is hot stone massage?
Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated basalt stones combined with hands-on massage techniques. The stones are warmed to a comfortable temperature and either placed on specific points along the back, or used as an extension of the hands to glide warmth through the muscles. The result is a deeply calming, full-body experience that feels distinctly different from any other massage.
How hot are the stones?
The stones are heated to a comfortable, soothing temperature — never uncomfortable or burning. Laura tests every stone against her own skin before it touches you, and you're welcome to flag any temperature preferences at the start of the session or at any point during the treatment. If a stone ever feels too warm, just say so and it will be cooled or set aside immediately.
What makes hot stone different from other relaxation treatments?
Heat is the differentiator. The warmth penetrates into the muscles in a way that hand pressure alone cannot — allowing tightness to release without the need for firm pressure. Many clients find hot stone particularly effective when they're cold, tense, or wound-up and need their body to physically downshift. It's also one of the most uniquely "spa-like" experiences on offer.
Is hot stone massage relaxing or therapeutic?
Both, but it leans more relaxing than therapeutic. The flowing massage techniques combined with the heat encourage deep relaxation rather than targeting specific injuries or muscular issues. If you have a specific painful area or injury that needs assessing, book remedial massage instead — hot stone is the right choice when the goal is calm, warmth and overall release.
Who should NOT have hot stone massage?
Hot stone isn't suitable for everyone. Please don't book this treatment if you are pregnant (book remedial pregnancy massage instead), have high blood pressure, heart disease or circulatory issues, have diabetes with reduced sensation in your skin, have recently had surgery, are sensitive to heat or have a sunburn, have varicose veins or open wounds in the treatment area, or are taking medications that affect skin sensitivity. If you're unsure, mention it when booking and Laura will let you know whether it's appropriate.
Will I feel the stones the whole session?
Not constantly — the stones are used in two ways throughout the session. Some are placed on specific areas (along the spine, in the palms, between the toes) where they sit and radiate warmth. Others are used as part of the massage itself — held by Laura and glided through the muscles with oil. So the experience alternates between deeply still warmth and flowing movement.
Should I book 60 minutes or 90?
For a first session, 60 minutes gives you a complete experience and is the most popular choice. The 90-minute option allows more time for slower transitions, extended work on the back, shoulders and legs, and a less rushed full-body session — many regulars switch to 90 once they've experienced it. Both are real, complete sessions.
How often should I have a hot stone massage?
It depends on what you're using it for. Many clients book monthly as part of a relaxation routine, or more often during winter or stressful periods when the warmth is particularly welcome. There's no medical guideline — it's about what supports your wellbeing.
Is hot stone massage claimable on health funds?
No — hot stone is a relaxation-focused treatment and isn't claimable on private health extras cover. If you need a claimable treatment, book remedial massage instead — Laura is ATMS-registered and most major health funds cover eligible remedial treatments.
How much does hot stone massage cost?
60 minutes is A$119 and 90 minutes is A$159. A 10% surcharge applies on Sundays and public holidays. Prices match our Fresha booking system.
Can I book online?
Yes — online booking is open 24/7 via Fresha, or call 0493 428 064. The Runaway Bay studio serves clients across the Gold Coast.
