What this treatment actually is
OrganicSpa Facial Massage at Massage by Laura is a calming facial, jaw, scalp and neck massage using gentle organic skincare products. The emphasis is on relaxation and tension release — not clinical skin correction. If you're after active dermal treatments (peels, microneedling, laser, advanced anti-ageing procedures), please see a qualified dermal therapist or beauty clinic — this is a different kind of treatment with a different purpose.
Where this treatment shines is in releasing the chronic tension most people don't realise they're carrying through the face. Jaw clenching, forehead furrowing from screen focus, tight temples from stress, eye strain, neck tightness from device use — all of this sits in muscles that respond beautifully to gentle, skilled massage. The organic skincare element adds a sensory, nourishing layer that makes the whole experience feel restorative rather than purely therapeutic.
Every session is delivered by Laura — an ATMS-registered remedial massage therapist with 8 years of clinical experience — at our Runaway Bay studio.
How much tension lives in your face (more than you think)
The face contains over 40 small muscles that quietly work — and quietly tighten — through the day. The masseter (jaw muscle) clenches under stress and during sleep. The frontalis (forehead) furrows during concentration. The temporalis tightens during teeth-grinding or tension headaches. The corrugator (between the brows) holds the expression of focus, worry, or screen-stare.
Most people walk around with low-grade tightness through all of these without noticing — until they feel a slow release during a facial massage and realise how much they were holding. Common signs your face carries more tension than you'd like:
- Waking with a sore jaw or aching teeth (likely night-time clenching)
- That tight band feeling across the forehead by mid-afternoon
- Eye strain and heaviness after long screen days
- Tension headaches that build through the temples
- A face that feels "tired" even when you've slept
- Chronic tightness through the neck and into the base of the skull
The facial massage element of this treatment goes after all of that. It's the part of the session that delivers genuine, tangible relief — not just the spa feeling, but real release of muscles that have been bracing for hours.
Benefits of facial massage
Here's what facial massage reliably does (and what we'd rather not overclaim):
The strong, well-supported benefits:
- Releases tension in the jaw, temples, forehead and around the eyes
- Eases tension-driven headaches by softening the muscles that contribute to them
- Calms the nervous system — the face has dense nerve endings, and gentle facial work is one of the most reliable ways to shift into a parasympathetic state
- Boosts circulation through the face and neck
- Provides uninterrupted screen-free time — increasingly rare, increasingly needed
- Helps with sleep on the night of the session
The gentler claims (we'll say "may"):
- May support a refreshed, brighter appearance for a day or two afterwards
- May help reduce the feeling of facial puffiness
- Many clients leave looking and feeling more relaxed
What we don't claim:
- Anti-ageing or wrinkle reduction
- "Lifting" or tightening of the skin
- Treatment of any skin condition (acne, rosacea, pigmentation, etc.)
- Clinical or long-term cosmetic results
For those outcomes, please see a qualified dermal therapist, beauty clinic, or dermatologist — different scope, different qualifications, different treatments.
The organic skincare element
Gentle organic skincare products are layered through the session — typically cleanser, facial oil and moisturiser, sometimes a mask depending on the session length. They're chosen for their gentle feel and natural ingredients, and they add a calming sensory layer to the treatment.
The specific brand and product range may evolve over time. If you have allergies, sensitivities or a known skin condition (eczema, rosacea, very reactive skin), please mention it when booking and Laura will adjust the products used or offer a small patch test before the session begins. We'd rather pause and check than push through something that might irritate.
30 minutes vs 60 minutes
30-minute session — A$70
A face-focused, calming reset. Cleansing, facial massage through the forehead, temples, jaw, cheeks and around the eyes, gentle scalp work, moisturising. Perfect for a lunch break, a quick wellness top-up between busy days, or your first time trying the treatment.
60-minute session — A$120
The full experience. Everything in the 30-minute version, plus extended work on the neck and shoulders (where most facial tension is actually rooted), more thorough product layering, and an unhurried pace throughout. This is the version most regulars settle into once they've experienced both.
OrganicSpa Facial Massage vs other calming treatments
vs de-stress massage
De-stress is a full-body 60 or 90-minute relaxation session built around the nervous system. The facial massage is more focused — just face, jaw, scalp and neck. Choose facial if facial tension is your main concern or you want a shorter session. Choose de-stress if you want a complete body reset.
vs ear candling & head massage
Both are head/face/neck focused 30-minute calming rituals. The ear candling session adds the sensory experience of candling and is more focused on the scalp and head; the facial is more focused on the face itself and uses organic skincare products. Pick whichever experience appeals more — they're both lovely.
vs a clinical facial / beauty treatment
Clinical facials use active ingredients (acids, peels, extractions) and corrective tools (microdermabrasion, LED, microneedling) to target specific skin concerns. Laura's OrganicSpa Facial Massage is a relaxation-and-tension-release treatment that uses gentle organic products as a sensory layer. Different goals, different scope — book whichever matches what you actually want.
Who this treatment suits (and who it doesn't)
This treatment is a good fit if you carry tension in your face or jaw, you spend long hours at screens, you want a calming pause that includes a beautiful skincare element, you enjoy gentle sensory treatments, or you're looking for a thoughtful gift for someone who could use a break.
This treatment might not be the right starting point if you have a specific skin condition that needs medical attention (acne you'd like treated, rosacea flares, pigmentation, post-procedure healing), you're looking for active anti-ageing or skin-tightening treatments, you have very reactive skin and haven't done a patch test with the products before, or you'd prefer a body-focused massage — book de-stress massage instead.
This treatment can help with
OrganicSpa Facial Massage is most useful for clients dealing with these patterns:
What to expect during your appointment
Your session begins with a brief conversation about how you're feeling, any skin sensitivities or product preferences to flag, and what you'd like from the session. If you have any specific tension you want addressed (sore jaw, tight forehead, neck pain), this is the moment to mention it.
The session itself is unhurried. Cleansing first, then the facial massage — slow, rhythmic work through the forehead, temples, cheeks, jaw, around the eyes and mouth, and into the scalp. The 60-minute version extends into the neck, shoulders and décolletage where so much facial tension actually originates. Organic products are layered through the session, adding a calming sensory dimension to the work.
Afterwards, most clients leave looking softer and more relaxed, with noticeably less tightness through the jaw and face. The skin often has a brief refreshed glow from the circulation boost. The deeper benefit — calmer nervous system, eased headaches, less clenching — tends to extend through the rest of the day and into a better night's sleep.
